A
James Beattie header in first half stoppage time was the difference
between the two sides despite Stoke being down to 10-men due to Rory
Delap’s first half red card.
Afterwards Hughes said: “We’re
obviously disappointed given the circumstances of the game. We would
have expected to have got something out of it.
“We’ve seen that
time and time again in the past in games, not only involving ourselves,
where the extra player is deemed to be an advantage but sometimes it
isn’t.
“The big disappointment was conceding the goal because
we were very much in control of the game at that point and to concede
with something like 10 seconds left of the first half was a blow that
we didn’t really recover from.
“It gave Stoke something to battle and fight for and made a difficult situation even more so.”
“In
the second half we needed to do more and on occasion we had a
reluctance to throw the ball into the box and see what happens. That’s
probably as a consequence of a little bit of a lack of physical
presence that’s been highlighted time and time again.
“In the end we just needed to find a flash of inspiration to unlock the door and enable us to get back into the game.”
