Manchester City signed Chelsea defender Wayne Bridge on a 4 1/2-year contract, the Premier League club said on its Web site.
Bridge, 28, becomes Manchester City’s first addition in the January transfer period. The club didn’t disclose financial terms of the agreement for the England international, though the Times and other U.K. media reported it’s about 10 millions pounds ($14.5 million).
“He is an England international and has just played for one of the top four sides in the country,” City manager Mark Hughes said on the club’s Web site. “He is of the right quality and is the type of player we need to attract.”
Bridge had been unable to earn a regular starting spot at Chelsea since the 2006 arrival of England teammate Ashley Cole. He joined the Blues in 2003 from Southampton for 7 million pounds.
