week of training in Tenerife and the arrival of new blood will
galvanise the City squad as they gear up for the rest of the season.
That's the opinion of Richard Dunne, who took time out of the training camp last week to assess how the week had gone.
Reflecting on the time away while the club was at the heart of so much speculation, the skipper said:
"It
was good, everyone enjoyed it. The weather was not too good at home so
it was nice to get out and have a few full sessions in the sunshine and
having two new additions to the squad was good as well.
"Being
away helped in that we did not really hear what was going on, other
than little bits. It did not really affect the players, maybe everyone
wants to have a little swipe at us because of the money that the club
has available. They probably feel it is their right to have a go at us,
so it's up to us try to not give them any more excuses.
"We need
a bit of spirit to get things moving, and the more people have a dig,
the more you want to come out fighting. We have a squad full of good
characters and people that can fight, for their own pride and that of
the club. We don't want to allow people to have an easy pop at us
anymore."
During last week the Blues' squad was augmented by first Craig Bellamy and then Nigel de Jong, and of the two Dunne adds:
"The
new lads came in and straight away did very well. The manager knows how
good they are and they look like great additions to the squad."
Welsh international striker Bellamy is a familiar opponent to the captain, who is pleased to now be on the same side as him.
"I
have never had any problems with him, and he is the sort of player that
opposing teams hate - a bit like Paul Dickov in a way!" he laughs.
"He's a good one to have on your side, and he has a character and
determination that hopeful can give us a bit of a lift. You can get a
player that arrives and tells people what he thinks of them, so maybe
we'll get reactions and progress as a team because we have a bit more
fire in the side."
And of midfielder de Jong, captured from Hamburg SV, Richard says:
"He
took to training straight away, he seemed very confident, speaks
English and knows Vinnie as well, so he looks like a good signing."
