City’s
new left back never played against Pompey during his time at their
bitter south coast rivals Southampton, but his only Barclays Premier
League goal for Chelsea was against Portsmouth in December 2003.
“I
think I’ll be getting a few chants of ‘Chelsea reject’ and stuff about
my time at Southampton, but I like those sorts of games!” laughs
Wayne. “I want to get out and play, if I could get a goal there will
definitely be a big celebration.”
If picked, Wayne will make his
debut a week after being paraded in front of City’s home fans, and he
is keen to finally show them what he can do out on the pitch.
“It’s
been a while since I made a debut, but I’m really looking forward to
it. I hope the boss picks me and if so I’ll do the best I can.
“I
know that fans here are great from what I hear and what I have seen
before when I have played against City. We want the club to progress
and give them something to cheer about. First and foremost we have got
to get back to winning ways, that needs to start at the weekend so we
can’t look too far ahead. I want to start with three points at
Portsmouth.
“There are personal reasons and my international
ambitions, but my main reason for coming to City was to show people
what I can do week-in, week-out. I hope people will be pleased with me,
I’ll get out on the pitch and do what the boss wants me to do, and I
want people to be pleased with me doing the best I can.”
