Hughes is happy with the striking options he has at his disposal, which
he expects to be bolstered by the return of Valeri Bojinov in the near
future.
The Manager has been reflecting further on the end of the
transfer window, which saw Jo head along the M62 to Everton but did not
see Roque Santa Cruz come to City, despite the Club's well-documented
attempts to bring the Paraguayan in.
The Blues' front-line is not
the tallest in the Barclays Premier League, and although Santa Cruz
would have altered that the Manager is happy that the players he does
have coming back will lend physical presence.
"He (Santa Cruz)
would have addressed that," Mark declares, "but we allowed Jo to go and
you could say that there’s height there. But Benjani is coming back,
Danny Sturridge too and Valeri Bojinov is very close to getting games
at reserve team level, so we hope he’ll be back soon. In all honesty,
Jo was not likely to feature in the team from now until the end of the
season.
"Boj has been joining in and doing warm-ups before
joining in bigger area work, so we hope he joins in a game this week.
Kelvin actually joined in for the first time on Monday, so that’s
positive after so long away. We’re getting players back and that has to
help before the end of the season.
"In the short term we might
have a problem with physical presence, but we have different types of
players, and Ched Evans is coming back from an injury and he has a
presence up front as well.
"Roque would have ticked a lot of boxes, but we have alternatives."
Other
than Jo, there were no outgoings from the squad on deadline day, with
the Manager happy to keep City's younger talent from going anywhere
with an eye on the future.
"We said all along we were not in the
business of selling our better players," he continues, "and younger
players have a real empathy for the club if they have come through the
ranks. That is something we want to build the team around, we are not
in the business of trying to make a quick buck, it’s about building and
making sure we are strong at all levels. There’s also a clear path for
everybody to see."
