Hughes wary of Kidd impact

There will be a familiar face waiting for Mark Hughes when City take on Portsmouth on Saturday.

Pompey
have announced that Brian Kidd will be assisting caretaker manager Paul
Hart following the dismissal of Tony Adams earlier this week. Kidd, who
spent three years at City in the 1970s, coached Hughes while the pair
were at Manchester United before both eventually moved into management
themselves.

A spell in charge at Blackburn ended with Kidd being
sacked after just a year, but he had more success as assistant manager
at Leeds United around the turn of the decade. He now teams up with
Hart, Portsmouth's Director of Youth Operations, with their first game
being the only Barclays Premier League game of the weekend, and of the
appointment Hughes says,

"Brian Kidd is a first-class coach and
an outstanding individual. He's a great guy, very organised and has a
clear idea of what he wants to do in a training session. My experience
of him was that he could always produce training sessions that could
illustrate what the manager wanted.

"I really enjoyed my time in
teams I was involved in with Brian, he's a good man to have come in at
this time at Portsmouth, they have made a good appointment.

"Paul
Hart is also a very experienced football man, I have had dealings with
him in the past and was very impressed with his knowledge of the game.
It looks like a good partnership, even if it is only in the short term."

Portsmouth's
form has seen them plummet down the table while City now sit in ninth,
and a win would see City into seventh place on goal difference. It's
been a quick turnaround in form for both teams, as Hughes acknowledges.

"It
has been a difficult league this year, there have been a number of
teams that have been close in terms of ability. There were high
expectations at Portsmouth having won the FA Cup last year, and they
have not been met.

"Pressure has built up, and that can affect
the performance of any team. The decision was made to change the
manager, and they must hope it is the right one."
