Take the first steps to quit smoking

City supporters are being encouraged to start exercising to help quit smoking in a new poster campaign. The
message ‘Take the first step to quit smoking’ is displayed on posters
around the concourse at the City of Manchester Stadium, the posters
having gone up for the City’s home game with Wigan Athletic..

The
posters aim to show that anyone can take the first step to stop
smoking. Research has shown that exercise can help reduce nicotine
cravings, so increasing your chances of quitting as well as helping to
reduce weight gain.

Abbie Paton, Manchester Stop Smoking
Service Manager said: “It doesn’t have to cost a lot to exercise;
people can start by walking, cycling or swimming. We encourage people
to take the opportunity to get advice and support to quit smoking from
NHS Manchester’s Stop Smoking Service.

“We run drop-ins at a
large number of venues across the city such as children’s centres,
pharmacies, health centres, hospitals and markets.”

The service
is free of charge and open to anyone who lives or works in Manchester.
People can access the service by texting the word ‘smoke’ to 81025 and
get support from a trained advisor or they can call 0161 205 5998.

The
poster campaign is a joint initiative between NHS Manchester’s Public
Health Development Service and Getting Manchester Moving. It will
continue through to spring 2009 exploring sensible drinking, bowel
cancer screening and other health related issues.
